EASTERN WA HUNTING
« on: October 08, 2007, 11:52:57 AM »
Hello everyone, new to the forum here.  I've been in wenatchee valley now since 2004 as a NoDak transplant, and of course love it.

However, I finally purchased a shotgun this summer and am ready to start hunting.  I like hunting any upland game, pheasant and ruffed grouse are the main birds I hunted when I was in NoDak.

Just looking for general tips and advice on where to go hunting???  I know that grant county is where the pheasant seem to be.  Anyone hunted up by Sun Lakes wildlife area??

Also I wouldn't mind trying duck/geese but have no experience there. :dunno:

Happy hunting!

I did do some searching on the site which helped some, but I guess not being familiar with the area I'm finding it difficult to figure out where to go...

you should really make sure not to expect nearly the kind of pheasant hunting you had in no-dak.
look at the wdfw site, there is a link inside that thread i posted the link for that lists release sites, and there is also other info on their site showing public land opportunities.
a couple of the places i mentioned in that thread are not too far from sun lakes...

Two years ago was the best season I have ever had in the past 20 years.  Last year was one of the worst.  I heard the numbers are better this year.

Skip Grant county, the harvest numbers are high because there are a zillion "206'ers" in that area all season.  They may kill 40,000 pheasant but it only averages out to 1/2 a bird for every hunter.

Check out the area south of Spokane all the way down to the Snake River.  Lots of ground that is very similar to North Dakota, rolling hills, brushy draws and tons of dryland grain fields.  It may be frustrating at first to locate areas you can hunt, but stick with, talk to farmers in the off season of later in December/January when the knocking on their front door has subsided from the first month of the season.  It'll be worth it once you find a few good spots that don't get hammered and you can count on them year after year.

Thanks for all the advice!  That should get me started in the right direction.

So in reviewing all the rules and regs, it seems like unless posted, the only land off limits is state parks and tribal lands?? Is that right?

non posted land is still "no hunting" in Washington.  It has to be posted Feel Free to Hunt or you need permission for it.

Correct, RCW code's cover illegal trespass, including hunting on unposted private land. You also should contact the DNR/ BLM for any lands owned by them you'd like to hunt, not all DNR/ BLM land's are open to hunting, some wildlife areas also have closures to hunting. You can find a lot of pheasant in the Crab Creek Rec area. Grousing is very good to the north of you in the Okie.
