GPS recommendations.

In the market for a new gps.  I guess I need one that I can put a chip in.  What's everyone using these days?

Following. Was just headed here to ask the same thing. Hope you don't mind me hitch hiking with some ?s of my own.

I personally had the Rhino before, but I never used the function where you can link up with other people. So I'm not sure I see the benefit there.

I am leary about touchscreen. Never used one before, don't know if they're ok. The Oregon, Montana, and eTrex look appealing due to a larger screen.

Also, do you need any special software for these? I see some are preloaded.

I had a Garmin Oregon with the touchscreen, but wasn't crazy about it. I'm running the 64st now, and don't have any complaints with it.

I really like the 60 series which use buttons rather than touch screen. The current iterations are the 64 models. Models with an "s" like the "64s" have an electronic compass and barometric altimeter; the "t" models have built-in topographical maps.  The maps in the "t" models are not very high quality. You're far better off putting your own maps in from a source like onXmaps.

The RINOs are nice if there is more than one in the party; I have three so I can give a couple to my partners if they don't have one. If there's not more than one in the party, the heavier weight and more obtuse interface of the RINOs detract from the value of them in my opinion. They also come with a rechargeable battery; to use AAs requires the purchase of an additional adapter. The 64 series use two AAs so it's easy, inexpensive and little extra weight to carry some extras with you.

Montana 650 with onX map chip
The smaller screens of others will drive you crazy. That's why I went up to the Montana and down loading satellite images works better.
Touchscreen I really like

Rhino and iphone with OnX map.  Phone road hunting and fine detail work, Rhino for general purpose and phone.  Have an Oregon but stopped even packing it last year.

I like my Oregon 650t with Onxmaps. Seen em on sale a lot lately

Only downside is the battery life (AAs) isn't too great, however using rechargeables and a home charger helps a bit.

I got a battery quick charger that does 12 batteries charges off my cigarette lighter in the truck, very handy.   I use it for the FoxPro caller and anything that takes AA or AAA
