Little time to hunt
« on: June 03, 2017, 06:32:14 PM »
This year is going to be tough to get out and hunt. My days are limited to Oct 26-31. I was wondering if you had such little time where would you head out of state to hunt deer?

Alabama.  Limit 3 deer per day in certain parts. Out of state tags are cheap.

I miss hunting whitetail in the south! But I should say I would like to stay in the west.

Kinda depends on what you want to hunt and what your goal is? Are you just looking to fill the freezer or are you after horn? If horns, do you want care how big the horns are? What about mode of travel? Driving, flying and renting a car etc...

In my limited knowledge I'd venture to Montanas region 7 for an OTC whitetail doe tag. Should be a fun hunt with lots of land to hunt. A bit of a drive for some people, but it can be done in a day.

South Dakota black hills is nice country with plenty of deer but you'd have to check on tag availability.

Idaho is closer, but I don't know if you can get on resident OTC tags. I'm sure someone on here has info on that.

If you are willing to travel to the Southeastern states you can potentially harvest multiple deer for relatively inexpensive tags.

After doing research since Ive posted this I think my best OTC opportunity with driving from here is Idaho.

Good plan, I'd say that's about your only option with only 6 days for the trip. You might as well buy a license now and apply for a controlled hunt. Deadline is June 5th.

Idaho is your best bet.

In regards to the black hills region of South Dakota all nonresident tags are draw and the season is in late November, although I guess if a guy wants to bowhunt back there you only have to apply by the deadline you are guaranteed a tag and it would be open for archery in that timeframe

For a fill the freezer, I would probably hunt MT.  That is only because I know a few areas and can get guaranteed tags for a semi-decent price.

Second choice would be somewhere in state.  Learn a new area.

For anything other than the first legal animal, I would have no good ideas.

That's prime blacktail hunting...
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.
