6.5 creedmoor for long range hunting? Gun Porn Pg 2
« on: April 21, 2017, 02:20:35 PM »
Lets say a guy wants to kill elk sized animals to 600 yards......Is a 6.5 creedmoor enough gun?  Said guy is shooting 140 grain accubonds with handloads and is very accurate with his handloads.  He doesn't like magnum sized rifles due to recoil, though he knows there are arguable better calibers available for long range hunting.  Reality is he will likely never shoot much past 300-400 yards but in the instance he can't get closer, Is 6.5 creedmoor enough gun in your opinion?

I know everyone has personal bias.....as do I....but lets not make this a pissing match and just state your opinion.

Thanks

My view it is way to light of a bullet.  Possible to make a kill shot? Yes.  Someone will chime in a stay the Horaspeerdynomax 8000 core bonded blah blah blad would hold up but that is a long ways with a light bullet on a tough animal.

My go to numbers on any max range is 1800 fps and 1000lb minimum. Yes I have killed animals with less of course but those are what I try to stick to and I have seen great results. in 16-17 I have killed 9 big game animals with a 6.5 even though mine is a bit of a monster for a 6.5. The 6.5 bullets and BC'S are very impressive and I have grown fond of the 6.5's for long range hunting.

I am sure the creedmoor can do that to 600 yards. So I would have no problem myself using it to that range.

The 6.5 Creedmoor is a exellent cartridge! Well capable of taking a Elk at 600 yards. It's the .260 Remington done right. That's why I have 3 of them, the 140gr Hornady A-Max and 143gr ELD-X are wicked accurate in them.

From the read, it sounds like he made a good stock to get within range of the caliber he chose.
Would not have been my choice for elk, but you can't argue with the results.

I think he got lucky.

It doesn't sound like he was aiming for the neck.

My factory go to cartridge for 30 years has been a chambering I am very fond of, the .300 Win Mag. There are many chamberings under it that are well capable of taking a Elk at distance. I've shot big game from the largest chamberings to what some consider grossly sub par but they are all dead. I like to mix it up, I like to go with my mood and I like to test myself. To each their own!
