I think I'd pick Salmon. I've hunted different parts of it over the years & had good luck. I haven't hunted elk for quite awhile but my guess without looking is that harvest numbers are better in the Salmon. There are some big deer also.

As long as you are going to buy a ID hunting license, you should put in for elk & deer permit draws & maybe draw a true hunt of a life time. If you want to spend $2,100 for a moose tag, there are units with fairly good drawing odds.

Sorry to thread jack, but Moose is what I am looking at putting in for this year (specifically the Panhandle) is there a better place? a PM will do if not wanting to broadcast. I picked the panhandle due to proximity and know there are Moose there.

The area we were in had no moose.  The locals and guides we talked to said 10 years ago the moose were thick.....literally would see 20-40 moose a day.  Now you are lucky to find one.  Lots of wolf crap, tracks and even one sighting at 950 yards....if it had stood still were were going to kill it, but it was on the move.   :bash: :bash: :bash:  (yes we had wolf tags)  We filled deer tags..nothing special but great meat in the freezer.  No elk hit the ground....only saw one small bull but not in an area we wanted to kill it.  Great trip, great scenery, awesome hunting partner and good eats.  Can't wait to do it again next year.     The Selway is not for the faint of heart.......crazy steep and if you don't know what your doing, could be very dangerous.

Further north the better for moose - nothing below unit 6.  forget selway - last moose seen there was couple years ago.

The Herd Creek Unit has the giants you are looking for. I'll not give anymore info than that. Archery hunting that unit is so fun. One of Jones's first archery vids was shot in that unit.

I don’t think the population there is nearly as strong as in the panhandle, but we did see a moose in the Selway this year so there are definitely some there still.

Who said it was quality.  I have hunted Montana and seen bigger bulls.  I have seen bigger deer in Washington.  It was far from quality.  Not to mention.....most of the selway is wilderness.  Most on this sight will never travel as deep as we went.  Go explore and be greatly disappointed by the amount of wolf sign and lack of animals.  If you get lucky and find an elk.....good on you.

Selway.
However no matter how far in you pack if you can't climb from the bottom of the creek drainage to the too of the ridge every day then don't bother.

Yup.
It's never coming back.
Wolves ate everything but the few cows they are breeding themselves.
The circle of life hit a dead end on Selway Drive.
Wrong turn.
Game over.

I know an outfitter in Idaho and her area is near, Leadcore Idaho. ( I' sure that's the name ) Right on the Wyoming border, south of Yellowstone. I might be off a bit, but it's over there closeby.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

Transplanted Canadian Wolves are everywhere in our lower 48 elk states and they excel in more open country. Elk have changed their habits, vocalization, and where they hang during various times of their elk day.  Once a hunter tunes into this their opportunities increase when in the game. Go get um ;)
