Gun identification?

From what is legible I know this gun is a Remington from the late 1800's,  anyone know what caliber it might be?

Looks like a Rolling Block. It was made in a lot of calibers if it was an American gun and not for export likely 40/70 or 45/70.  Late models I believe where even in 30.06

It's a Rolling block but we'd need pictures of stampings to say what cartridge it takes.

Remington Rolling Block, most common calibers were 43 Spanish and 45-70 with a bunch of others from 50-70 to .22. Bill W's link is a good source for info.

Don't know about the rifle, but the Bertucci watch that I have is bulletproof.
Wear it every day running chainsaws and swinging a machete much of the time.
Running saws is tough on watches.

Good info here....check it out.  I will post pics of mine in a few days with all the proof marks.  Pretty remarkable rifles really.  I have read that a lot of these rifles were rechambered at some point to handle modern cartridges.  I also understand them to be very strong actions very capable of modern smokeless powder charges.  If I were ever to shoot mine, I would have it checked by a gunsmith for overal contition and chamber confirmation.

Probably a 45-70.

Thanks for the good info. The gun belonged to my great uncle and now a cousin has it. I'll give it a  closer look next time I'm over there.

Remington did that model in 20 or so chamberings. I have shot them in 45-70 and .30-40 Krag. I watched a bear get shot with the .30-40 Krag. Really cool rifle!
