Best anchor for Hanging mounts or antlers
« on: May 29, 2017, 09:33:46 PM »
Just finishing up my new gameroom. Have a question on hanging mounts and antlers from the walls. All the walls and ceiling are covered in 7/16 OSB and finished with 1/2" Sheetrock over the OSB. Do you think using some kind of bolt with an expanding head behind the OSB will be plenty strong to hold things up? Or would you still screw into a stud if you could? Only have deer heads right now. And a couple elk racks on plaques.

I would find studs, over time they may work loose. Most homes, garages do vibrate a little.

Studs are always the best choice.  These would be a good second choice, especially since it will be bearing on OSB

When I built my house I took 2X6 - 2X12's and filled in the voids between studs on the upper walls in my living room so that I could hang anything with a lag screw anywhere that I want without worrying about finding a stud.  Your OSB should be fine for small stuff and Europeans but you might want to find a stud or use molly bolts for anything bigger.

I post this for others who want to do the same as you when they build.  Sheet with cdx plywood, not OSB.  Plywood does much better with screw attachments.  Solid blocking is best as mentioned above.

The molly anchor shown above will be your best bet and will last your lifetime with a static load.
