Pointers on a new Bushnell trail cam
« on: July 03, 2017, 06:53:55 PM »
My wife bought me a bushnell trail camera. I have never had a trail cam.  To kinda get me started and dialed in. What elevation and how far should it be placed from the target area. Thanks.  Paul

Assuming flat ground I put mine about chest height but adjust based on slope. As far as distance, at least 10 yards or so is my favorite. Few pointers are to make sure there aren't any plants, limbs etc that are or will be in the line of sight that will trigger camera during windy days. Also take the sun into consideration as far as what direction you point it. Not only will your pics get flooded out but also the sun can trigger your camera to snap pics. Finally, if possible point it up or down trails to give you best chance to get good pics. Good luck and welcome to the addiction.

Make sure the memory card works before you leave it in your cam for a couple weeks..  :'(
I also put any bait or salt out after I set the cam so I don't get as much scent on it, at least I think it helps. Had elk push both my cameras 180 degrees around last year and missed out on two weeks

I also have just bought a trail camera and I'm learning to use it. Hunting is so exciting!

Buy padlocks for the SD card doors so that people can't swipe the card, and python cables for the cameras. Learned my lesson after having a couple grow legs.
