I tried to find any other way to start this, I take it needs a key?

Looks like you will need a new ignition switch.  They are about $20-$25.
Are they pretty specific to each model or universal??

Just Google "1983 OMC ignition switch"

Welcome to the joys of new boat ownership.  Also interesting to hear how a free boat can lead to spending a couple hundred bucks.

How would I bypass the key ignition on the throttle, does anyone have an idea?  I doubt it comes out of the throttle to be replaced.

You can open the control box pull the lock cylinder and remove the tumblers. Then it will start with any key, screw driver, or replace it with a switch.

The keys are universal. A John Deere key filed down will probably fit it.

I forgot a key on my yearly banks lake trip. Found a key that fit and worked in Wilber at the hardware store. But, you will never be able to rewire the controls. Don't even try. Wont work

I've done this all before. I'd you don't have the motor running perfectly right now without everything else....stop. You're in too deep.

Can't run the motor if I don't have a key to start it.
