single shot shotgun

I have 2 of the H&R's, one in 10 and one in 20.  The 20 goes with me everywhere when scouting during grouse season.  The 10, well that's a beast.

The 37 is a good choice.

But I would go with a champion.  Unless you want to drop $600 - $1000 then I would buy a Winchester model 20.

Taught both my boys how to hunt grouse with a cheap Stevens 94, 12 gage, breach load single. Still have the gun. Something about breach loaders, they make Great Wall art mounted with the breach open.

Yep I have one in 410 love it.  My kids,started with one in 20, they loved it.

Ill add my vote to the old h&r guns. My first shotgun was one of those and it took its fair share of grouse and rabbit.

You can't beat an old single shot shotgun in 410 or 20 gauge for early season grouse.

I like the old Ithaca Model 66 Super-Single shotguns, Lever action break open. Nice & light and fun to shoot. I pick them up when every I see them at the pawn shops.
The 410, & 20 gauges are fine grouse guns, but the 12 gauge is a shoulder buster.

The old Iver Johnson single shots are another fine choice, I have a bunch of them as well.

I think it's a law that you have to shoot at least one grouse in your lifetime with an H&R single.
A lot of the older singles were good...Stevens, Iver Johnson, NEF, etc. Stevens and Iver Johnson made a lot of guns that were also sold as regional store brands back in the day.
H&R and Henry still make their guns in the U.S. Most of the other single shots made today are produced overseas.

You mentioned project gun, the Russian baikals often need some help to start out but are tough little guns.  Strip their gunk off the wood, learn to checker a little and smooth out the closures

Are all H&R singles equal? I see the newer ones have a transfer bar safety whatever that is? Just curious if that's something to consider.

Not they are not. Just like most anything else 1 outa 10 made are worth a damn and shoot straight. You have a better chance of finding a good one if pre-84

Good question. Maybe even pre-94  . Older the better

Henry has just introduced a single shot shotgun in 12, 20, and 410.  I think they will run maybe $350.  I am thinking of picking one up when I see one in person.  They look nice but may be more then you want to pay.

They're owned by Remington but still producing H&R.

I know a guy that has an H&R/NEF 20ga single shot that is about to be put up for sale.  Vintage '92 (full quarter century) serial number with hand cut checkering and a serious pedigree for grouse.  I may pick it up myself.

My brothers and myself were taught to shoot with a single shot 16 gauge shot gun my father passed away 2 years ago we still have that gun was bought in the fifties i believe it was bought from wards in kellogg Ida. still like 16 gauges
