Idaho firearm laws?
« on: October 05, 2017, 02:43:55 AM »
I really can't find the gun laws for hunting in Idaho. My cousin always said it was legal to have rounds in the magazine but not in the chamber driving. The law online says you can have a gun loaded but not concealed driving in idaho. So if your driving around on forest service roads with your rifle next to you can it be loaded? I've always just kept mine unloaded but I'm curious

Yes your rifle can sit next to you on the seat loaded perfectly legal here.

Just another example of a state with freedom...

And idaho is a right to carry state so no need to worry about having a few other weapons hidden in the rig with rounds in the mag is legal also

:dunno: It appears that is true with a concealed weapons license, but not necessarily otherwise.

May I carry a firearm in my vehicle without a concealed weapons license?

A person does not have to have a concealed weapons license to carry or be in possession of a deadly weapon or firearm in the following circumstances:
a.Any deadly weapon located in plain view;
b.Any lawfully possessed shotgun or rifle;
c.A firearm that is not loaded and is concealed in a motor vehicle;
d.A firearm that is not loaded and is secured in a case;
e.A firearm that is disassembled or permanently altered such that it is not readily operable; and
f.A concealed handgun by a person who is:
i.Over twenty-one (21) years of age;
ii.A resident of Idaho; and
iii.Is not disqualified from being issued a license under subsection (11) of this section.

A person who does have a concealed weapons license may carry a deadly weapon or firearm concealed and loaded in a vehicle.

Not sure that I'd want that freedom with rifles in the car. As you know, most hunting incidents happen getting in and out of vehicles.

Yeah it happens here still.  Just be smart, its not worth blowing a hole in your foot jumping out of a truck to save a second throwing a round in the chamber.

Yeah, this is one of those things that I feel common sense should play a significant role. Is it really worth it to have a loaded rifle sitting next to you and the possible accidental discharge that comes along with that? Just keep a handful of shells in your pocket. You should be able to chamber a shell as your stepping out of a vehicle and not miss a beat.

Just my  :twocents:  err on the side of caution.

We have lost many hunters to accidents, don't drive around with loaded guns.  If you insist, just don't chamber a round. Why even risk it.  I grew up in a state that any time a vehicle was moving all guns had to be cased and unloaded.

Real freedom means being able to blow your foot off... doesn't mean you should try it out... but shows ID has less nanny state laws telling you what's good for ya.  :twocents:

Is that for any game or just deer and elk? What's the purpose of a weight limit?

Bob, what's the purpose of the restriction? They trying to prevent hernias or what? It may sound like a stupid question, but my 45" 6.5mm Grendel is 21 lbs and a perfect fixed position big game rifle. What's the thinking behind this?
