First Time Coyote Hunting and it was a Bust Need Ssome Help/Suggestions
«

My grandson and I went on very first coyote hunt and it was a bust. We probably did everything you shouldn't do better than it's been done before.
Hunted in the Warden Lake; Pot Holes; O'Sullivan Dam area.
We picked areas I think with to much sage brush and probably should have been in more open grassy areas but didn't because we thought we would be to exposed.
But as never did this before does anyone have suggestions for future hunts in this general area as to what type of terrain to set up in?

Timing might be your biggest obstacle.

Sit elevated on a rock outcrop or something so you can see over the sage.
Use terrain to your advantage, put something to your back so the coyotes won't circle behind, like a rock outcrop/cliff or river, even a highway.
use a shotgun in the thick stuff
get up very early, call first hint of light
find some cattle to call around

Sneek in to your stand as if the coyote was there already, hide the rig away or out of sight of your stand, don't slam doors or talk loud...sound carries.
Watch the wind direction and keep it in your face.
Get settled in your spot quiet as possible and limit movement. Make sure there aren't sticks or limbs that will break and make noise or move around when you do have to move and give away your position.
Have something behind you to break-up your outline as mentioned, but also something in front of you as well if possible so you are "in the middle' of the cover, just make sure it isn't blocking your shooting lanes.

If your from the area, just sit and listen to those howls at night on any bluff, than choose where to hunt. It's loaded in that area.

I called for years before I was calling them in regularly. For me, the sounds I make have very little to do with killing coyotes. No call can overcome a bad set up. There are two big mistakes that you have to avoid: I will not call an area no matter how good it looks with the sun to my face. You cannot hide from a coyote if you're illuminated. Just like when the sun is right and a coyote shines and sticks out. Also, coyotes can not see well with the sun in their eyes.
If you want to see more coyotes you have to see downwind as far as possible- several hundred yards if you can. Your area has a lot of coyotes and a lot of pressure from all kinds of hunters. It's always fun to have a shotgun range coyote charge in from upwind, but you're better off setting up for a downwind crossing shot and swing upwind for the dumb ones.
Also, my success more than doubles if I have a good partner. Sit close enough to communicate and face different directions.
Stick with it. The frustration of learning this sport is half the fun.

Keep at it. It takes time to figure out what works for you.
