2017 Tag soup club (updated)
« on: October 17, 2017, 10:01:35 PM »
I know it's early in the season, but I really don't expect to make it out again.

I hunted 4 days, saw around 50 doe and 1 buck.  He was 1200 or more yards away and he looked big but I couldn't really tell.

I put around 30-40 miles on my boots and almost all of that was up or down steep hills.

I didn't get a buck but had an absolute blast. Loved every minute of it. Lots of time with my dad, exercise, beautiful scenery, and quiet.

Honestly, I had a great season! I just don't expect to get out again. My schedule is packed.  No pessimism here. Thanks though.

Now I understand how you saw 24 does in one day.  I thought you were hunting in Bremerton!
Glad you had a good season.  Hopefully your schedule opens up for you.

Well.... I casually mentioned to my wonderful and amazing wife that with the storm that came in that I had gone the wrong weekend.  She responds, "well go again."  I reminded her how there isn’t enough time to go and how I don’t want to be away from the family again, so she says, “I will come with you.”  What?!?!?!!!! I have wanted her to come for years!! 😁
So, my pregnant wife helps me plan a LAST minute trip, leaving kids at grandma’s, the dog at my sister’s, etc.  We left late Sunday night for a five-hour drive and a Monday hunt plus same day five-hour drive back.
About 20 minutes into the hunt we are stalking a small buck. Didn’t get it because it gave us the slip.
Then, my wife stays in some sun to nap while I hit a nasty steep hill/canyon.  On top of the hill, I find myself out in the middle of a grassy area with no cover and with a bedded 2 pt. that I was sure must have spotted me. Then, I see the tips of another buck next to him, lower where I can barely see.
I army crawl to get a tree between me and the 2pt. and slowly make my way a little closer.  I hid behind this tree for 30 minutes watching this ‘look out’ buck who was preventing me from moving into position on the bigger buck.  Eventually, he turns and I quickly but quietly switched trees but only to be spotted by a doe I hadn’t seen before.
She gets up and so do the rest of the deer and... BANG!

You already know this but... she's a keeper.  Congrats on a memorable trip and vittles for the winter.

Great story!
This gives Me hope that after many years of asking My wife to come with Me on a hunt it's still a possibility that She could surprise Me and actually come along one day.

I missed the entire early season due to having to go to Michigan for my mom's funeral.  Will definitely be out for late season. I have the ingredients for Tag Soup but haven't thrown them in the pot yet.
