Upland hunting in the rain
« on: October 19, 2017, 12:30:48 PM »
How many here like to upland hunt in a steady rain?  With this crappy weather this weekend for the eastside pheasant opener, it makes me want to wait for better weather.  But, it it does still beat sitting at home.  I think.

Rain in not bad, the wind gets olds.  The Palouse is supposed to have gust to 40 for the weekend.  I say right this moment I am not going but I am sure I will wake up Saturday and have to go.  I will not expose my superposed to that crap, breaking out a duck gun that I don't care about

I like the rain since I am usually out by myself.  I find them in winter wheat field edges, and trees, rather than creek bottoms and fallow.  My theory is the rain exposes worms and bugs.   :dunno:

I was really hoping to get my pup out on his first quail somewhere on the east side, but maybe not in the rain this weekend.  He couldn't case less about it raining :chuckle:.  But having to scout out a place in the rain...  If I had a spot, I'm pretty sure I would be there.  :)

I don't mind the rain at all, but 40mph gusts sucks.

Depends on how long they hang up there for.  I've had some really poor shooting in the wind  :(

That's actually a bit surprising to me.  I didn't figure that many people would like upland hunting in the rain.

Light drizzle....ok.  Steady rain....no.  40mph gusts....negative.

Boy if I didn't I wouldn't do much. But I am on the west side. Get out there and do it I say tomorrow might not come. 40 mile winds and rain well that might not be so fun. Might find some else to do in that case like a honeydo or something with the family. So I don't have to hear the hunting widow stuff.

If you have a good dog, rain is great.  Easy for dogs to scent as birds are wet and smelly and hold well, especially early season.  Some of my best pheasant hunts ever were in rain.  For what its worth....good luck.
Fewer hunters as well.

We killed 10 wild roosters this morning in the rain. I find they hold netter, and dogs pick up the scent better.

True, I just don't enjoy walking around in the brush in the rain.  Heading out tomorrow though, and it's supposed to be beautiful!
