Maybe you could do the big game population a favor and take out some predators

You are out of luck until spring.
We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

No.  They are are not generally found in any huntable population on land that is not being worked or has not been used in the recent past for producing high yield crops.

Generally speaking you are going to find chucks denning in something like talus slopes, rock piles, old irrigation pipe, fallen in buildings or piles of limbs that have been pruned from fruit stock located next to irrigated hay meadows or orchards.  Finding them out in the middle of BLM land etc is pretty low probability.   Old pasture that has been allowed to go fallow is a good bet, especially if it is an abandoned homestead and there are rock piles/buildings or something they will den in.  Canals and RR grades have rip rap that makes for good denning, so if you can locate irrigated cropland that butts against either you will be looking in the right sort of area.
