I see everyone pointing fingers about ideas to increase the deer numbers, But if only half the members of this forum shot 2 how much would this help the deer population.

per coyote 40 deer per year(this is a number from the net,i dont think its even close so we will go in half just because).if only 50 members on this forum took 10 coyotes this winter that would save 100,000 deer from coyotes next year alone.

Problem:if we took 500 coyotes then the coyotes are going to produce more than usual to get their numbers back up.

Solution:Get out there,take everyone you can and don't stop,Every year.

Only problem with your plan is the numbers. I've seen estimates of 50,000 coyotes living in this state (honestly I would guess more) . At 40 deer apiece per year, that would be 2 million deer eaten each year by coyotes. With an estimated deer population of 300,000, that is an impossible toll.  Part of the "figuring" problem is, over 70% of a coyote's diet is rodents, birds, and vegetation such as berries.  They are very opportunistic. I'm sure a big part of their diet is roadkill. I'm not saying coyotes aren't a serious killer of deer, especially fawns, I'm just saying the number isn't close to what you posted.

yeah on the 70% part thats why i said half and still over. theres nothing wrong with what i said.these same peoples numbers say that coyotes take around 30% of the deer.the rest is vehicles,cougars,and nutrition.

when i said 500 it was just a number from maybe members here.

Being an avid coyote hunter, with out having trapping in this state, shooters will not make much of a dent in the coyote population.  In the past 10 yrs the coyotes have been hunted hard in the Desert Wildlife area and there are just as many or more than 10 years ago.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that bobcats and bear are fawns worst enemy!! And that isn't adding in cougars!! I hunt this long finger that juts out into this lake and in one day I found 3 brand new cougar kills , two were young bucks, both 2 lots with eye guards and a mature doe!! Bobcat love fawn as do bear!! My gut tells me and from what I see, especially for blacktail that if the game department doesn't do something blacktail are in big trouble 🙁

I think some areas are worse off than mule deer.

Trying to estimate the amount of coyotes in the state is a mute point. Yes they will reproduce and you will never rid the area of them. But there is also the introduction of the wolves. Also something that will never be able to rid of once again.
But if we do our part to reduce what we can that perhaps will give a few more fawns a chance. Coming up is the Breeding season and every one that hits the lawn could reduce the numbers by a few. Just as the following months when they have whelped reducing a few could reduce a few more litters. Nature is a harsh reality and there is not much difference in starvation and the damage that they do to the fawn population.

There are folks who are waiting for this coyote madness why wait. Start now. Before the state got involved in the permitting process there where impromptu coyote hunts.

If you are working on reducing the population there is also the chance of collateral opportunities.

There is no greater joy than ruining a coyotes day in the late spring then with a fawn distress.   


I think the numbers are a touch off.  People need to realize that most of the does will have fawns.  I spend time all year watching.  Trying to see how many does have fawns early to mid June vs mid July etc..  Those first two weeks are critical.  Deer populations would explode with one year of very high fawn survival rates. 

I tend to back off during the summers a bit more than I should.  I'm on the fence whether they cause more damage during the summer with fawns or winter with stressed deer.  But I don't wait, there are three less this morning in the world then there was last night

Selling them as they are worth some money this year.

Last week I called in 2 different coyotes ( a day apart) with a doe bleet can. I rarely see them when I'm out in the woods blacktail hunting.
