Help with exposure in snowy conditions
« on: March 14, 2009, 04:29:06 PM »
I was going to throw this in with the waterfall thread but I could use some help.  As you can see the whites are really blown out.  I am still pretty unclear on the spot metering, auto white balance, etc. and when to use it.  Any help is appreciated.  It was an overcast day.

Keep with auto white balance as you can change that later.  Other than that, you just blew out the highlights.  You can do 1 of 2 things...  You can take the picture, look at it on your screen in the camera, and adjust your exposure to -1.  Or, you can shoot it in raw and bring back that detail and exposure in your raw processor.  You can get this detail back by either turning down the exposure or using the recovery slider.  Either way will work.  Great job on slowing down the exposure to get good water softness.

I played around with your jpg. Trav, hope you don't mind. If I had the RAW image it would have been better but this gives you an idea what can be done. :twocents:

Friggin-A that looks nice.  Looks like I need to learn my software a lot better.  You and Robodad have it down.  Especially with a jpeg.

Don't worry about permission from me.  It is a huge help to see what you guys can do with post processing.  I am thankful for it.
