« on: January 28, 2018, 03:23:19 PM »
If you had to choose one or the other, which one would you guys pick?
.338 Mag. in Browning A-bolt
Vs.
300 Ultra Mag. in Remington model
or would you pick both?
I like to refer to the 300 Ultra mag as the Ultra death lol

What is the intended purpose for the rifle?
Practical accuracy and a packable rifle.
Blued steel and walnut is always better.

Get yourself a 338 RUM and never look back!  :chuckle:

If you have to choose between those, then the 300 Ultramag.  They are great calibers.

You beat me to it!  :chuckle:

I'd go with the 338 unless you plan to shoot critters beyond 600 yards on a regular basis. A 250gr bullet from a 338 Win Mag will typically do a lot less damage than a 180-200gr class bullet from a 300 RUM on something small like a deer. For bigger game like elk I'll take the larger diameter and heavier bullet every time.

It depends on your intended use.

If long range is on the menu, I like heavy for caliber bullets in the RUM.  I'm pushing a 230 grain berger OTM at 2950 fps out of my 27" 9 twist benchmark.  It is an absolute hammer out to ranges beyond which I'm likely to shoot.

The 338 Win is very versatile but not the long range performer of the 300 RUM.

:yeah:

230’s in the Rum = 1000 yards.  Thats a push with the 338 imo.

I have browning a-bolt .338 win mag since 1988. With 250 grain nosier partition I have taken about 20 deer and about 20 elk and about 35 African animals. I have taken animals out to about 400 yds with this gun. I also have a tikka 338 mag and with 225 grain accubonds can shoot 600 yards. I am a .338 mag hunter.

A more straight up comparison would be the .338 Ultra Magnum and the .300 Ultra Magnum.

Seeing the the .338 Ultra Magnum is based on a slightly shorter case length than that of the .300, 7mm and .375 Ultra Magnum's.

It is better suited for the heavies on the same size action. With plenty of horse power!

My vote would be for the .338 Ultra Magnum.

338 edge which is the 300 Rum necked up to 338. That would be my choice.

Of the two calibers mentioned I would get the 300 RUM. Then I would plan to get a .338 in a flatter shooting cartridge!

Both great calibers! Would choose the Edge over the Win mag tho!
