Bike rack for pickup canopy
« on: February 02, 2018, 09:07:40 PM »

I just thought someone might be interested in my newly invented bike rack. If you have a canopy on your truck, packing a bike along can be a real pain. If you have the bike on a conventional rear rack you have tomdismount the whole shebang to lower the tailgate. And putting it on top of the canopy is a pain to lift up there and clamp in place.

My rack fits on the side of the camper shel. Nothing sticks out wider than the mirrors, its easy to mount the bike and it is verysecure. The only modification to the bike is folding pedals that I got online for $25.

Did you have to drill through the canopy?  I wonder if one could be made for a fit tire bike.

A rack like this could be made to fit any size bike tire. I made the channels from 90 degree anodized aluminum.... mine are spaced with the verticals 2” apart to fit standard mtb tire. Just space the angle material farther apart for wider tire.

The channels are fastened to a 4” wide 60” long synthetic panel but wood or metal would work too. What made the whole concept work are folding pedals that allowmthe bike to fit tight against the canopy.
I fabricated base plates front and back to attach the base to the side of the canopy. Those are bolted to the canopy sides. I’ll take and post some detail pictures tomorrow.
