Morning Doves
« on: February 24, 2018, 04:44:57 PM »
The dozen or so doves in the back yard are starting to look fairly plump.  But September is a long way off yet.
Gathering is easy. Hunting is a challenge.

Are you sure they're mourning doves?  If they are eurasian doves, blast them.  :hunt2:
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

If you look at page 221 of the Sibley Field Guide Zenaida macroura is what I see 10 feet from me in the back yard.
The birds are in their winter plumage, which is more of a slate grey. The spots are there on the tail.
They and other birds go through about 200 pounds of bird seed each winter. Or 4 to 5 of Costco's 40 pound bird seed packages.
Additionally, hummingbirds go through about 10 pounds of sugar each winter (1/4 cu to 1 cup of water).
Gathering is easy. Hunting is a challenge.
