Subspecies Decoy Question
« on: April 11, 2018, 12:58:05 PM »
How important is it to match your decoy setup with the subspecies you're hunting? Noticed that not many options exist for Merriams decoys.

This will be my first time chasing gobblers in WA.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Where species overlap they cross breed as well. Any ol' hen will do for a horny tom.

The area above Spokane has cross-bred turkeys.

You might be overestimating the intelligence of the turkey.

I had wild toms trying to inseminate domestic white turkey hens through chicken wire on more than one occasion.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Turkeys are no more racist than dogs.  Any dekes will do.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Toms will do some straight up gratuitous action to plastic hens.  They see what they want to see - but they don't stop there  :chuckle:
