Anyone have experience with Encore 209x.50 muzzleloader?
« on: May 10, 2018, 05:06:39 PM »
I drank the kool aid and bought a .50 barrel for my Encore and now I've been doing a little reading here and there. The biggest thing I've confused myself with is what primer to use. I think I'll use the Blackhorn 209 powder. I know it's more expensive but I don't see myself shooting enough of it to make a huge difference money-wise. Just curious if anyone has any experience with the Encore.
Thanks in advance.

No experience with that gun, but have experience with Blackhorn 209 powder.
Any standard shotshell primer should work, I use Winchester. The manufacturer claims that better ignition can be had with "magnum" primers from CCI or Federal, but I'm aware of a bunch of guys from the modern muzzleloader site that have no problem using the standard primers. IMHO the key is a tight fitting bullet/sabot and you will have success.
Winchester primers are usually the longest so in many guns they seal better and typically produce less blow back into the action of the muzzleloader, (cleaner is better!  ;)).
