Advice on re- throat ( lengthen ) chamber

I have a good shooting 264 win mag , pac nor barrel 26 in , 1:8 .It seems to have a short throat or less than Saami spec throat ,as near as I can tell with a coal comparator , and  various bullets . I would like to know if Reaming the throat a little deeper to shoot some of the longer higher bc bullets is a option or even a good idea . This gun is kind of a tinker gun for me not a primary shooter.  I don’t mind spending some money depending if this is even a option . It will shoot vlds 140 and Barnes 127 s around  a inch but as soon as I start playing with seating depth I feel i run out of room and can’t quite tune them in . If this is even a option who could spin the barrel off the action and ream ( recommend gunsmith ) . And what would a job est cost ?

The question you should first consider is do you have a compressed load?  If not then there's no reason to seat the bullet out further.

How much more length can your magazine / ejection port handle or Do you want to go single shot?

Compressed load - no not even close . Is what my thinking is by the time i back the bullet of the lands so to speak i end up with 3/4 of the longer bullets back in the case . To the point where a hornady comparitor almost wont work before running into the case neck ?  I started with the standard seating system for berger bullets and could only test .010 off and .050 . The first two depths . At .090 i would be almost to the end of the bearing serface at the case neck . I simply run out of bullet to seat any deeper . May brain sais lengthen throat ( giving me more adjustment back ) away from the lands ? I tend to over think things so this may be the case also ¿
I have tons more mag length , thats not a issue at all .

Most certainly an option. Any reputable smith can do this for you. Heck you could do it your self if your handy and don’t mind buying a few tools. You’ll need a unithroater in the appropriate size. Barrel vice and action wrench and go/no go gages.

All you'll be changing is the freebore length so I don't really see why you'd need a set of go/no go gauges. 

I think you'd be better off and money ahead if you had a gunsmith do the work.  The way I understand it, you're just wanting to change the throat, not a rechamber, so it shouldn't cost a great deal.

I had Defensive Edge do their +P throat to my 6.5-284 awhile back and I don't remember exactly what it cost but it wasn't all the much.  If you are looking to squeeze a little more velocity from your 264 Win mag this would be a viable option to consider.

Thanks guys , I think b23 is on the same page as me . I’m not exactly sure of the tools / process of chambers and throat / freebore . Would I be wrong to assume that a go / no go gauge for a 264 win mag give me what I already have or is that measuring something else? Sorry I can usually make them shoot , but just not alot of gunsmith experience .

Just pick up a PTG Uni-Throater in .264 and do it yourself. The tool is $150 and it takes about 10 minutes to do. When you're done you can just sell the tool for $100 if you don't want to keep it. Or better yet, just rent one from these guys.

The process is super easy and anyone capable of changing their own oil can do it as long as they follow the directions. I've done all of my 338s myself as well as a couple of 30 cal and 7mm over the years.

Very good ! Just looked up uni throater from pacific tool and they even have a manual set up that you can do in a barreled action .  Learn something new every day thanks guys !

I've done all of mine with the barrel still mounted. That makes it easier to test fit dummy rounds to make sure that they'll function through the mag while you cut away a little at a time.

The go / no go is due to my personal experience. All my rifles have a barrel nut. With a standard barrel you don’t need those since head space is set.  Also why I would rather pull the barrel to do the work.

you can always remove throat material but you can't put it back (once removed).   Also make sure you don't have any chatter.

I'm still wondering why the rethroat if your bullets are already seated to the rifling, fit the magazine and are not a compressed load.... other than the look of ammo with the bullet seated further out.  .264's are hard on throats as it is and you may just be reducing barrel life. If the bullet is seated out far and there's erosion, you may not be able to seat the bullets out further to account for that.

(my reason for the reluctance to a longer throat is I did that to a .264 myself back in the early 70's.   The first batch of Model 70's used a 2 diameter bullet and a short throat)

Before you ream out the throat, load a dummy round with the longest VLD style bullet you might want to use, and figure out your seating depth and compare to maximum OAL allowed by the magazine. Make sure you remove less than the difference between those numbers.

Some of the longer heavier bullets actually require a shorter throat than the lighter bullets. If you're doing this specifically to shoot longer bullets, you might be going the wrong way.
