What filters ( oil and fuel) for 2007 5.9 cummins?
« on: June 16, 2018, 07:57:44 AM »
Doing the first oil change on my 2007 5.9 cummins and am curious what filters and oil you recommend?  Also change intervals.   Everything I Google is all over the place.

Well I have Amsoil filters and oil now in truck.  I used to buy quality oil filter and ran Delo diesel oil from Walmart (cheapest).  You should worry more about your fuel filter situation than oil.  Good oil and filter and she will be happy, change every 10k or sooner.  Now stock fuel filter is crap.  Put aftermarket 2-3micron on it.  1 tank of crap fuel and you will spend 3-5k$ to repair....

I've owned a bunch of dodge 5.9s.  I've just used Delo 400 for oil. For fuel I've done a 2 stage setup. Stock fuel filter then a second spin on 2 micron filter.  Most people don't realize how much water and crap there is in fuel. I flip the fuel filter bowl drain at least once a month with light driving and more often depending of how much driving. The stock fuel filter  is also a water separator. I change out my primary every 15k miles or so and the secondary the second time  I change it out.

If I have a really bad mileage drop I change out both filters and check/change the air.

If your 07 is a 5.9 before the emissions cramp you got the last good dodge. If it has the 6 speed stick your set.

This is the remote 2 micron napa filter mounted to my frame. I keep this pic on my phone so I can pick them up without having to remember. Mines mounted on the frame rail because it's easy to get to and my rigs are pavement pounders.

:yeah:  I got burned from bad fuel in my 01 Ford.  BAD!!  I learned my lesson...  At 25K PSI fuel injector pressures what ya think happens if little water or fine dirt sprays through you injector? It gets sandblasted, orifice which is tiny becomes larger, oval or plugged.  Bad performance follows like mpg or idle issues.  At $300x6 it gets very $$.  Stock filters are NOT good.  Frankly I am surprised how many people don't upgrade fuel filters.  T that looks like the NAPA WIX kit I put on my last Dodge.  3528 I remember that #.  I think I spent $47 for it.

I've purchased injectors and a pump because of my mistakes and ignorance. The kit/parts are cheap. The most important thing you can do is bleed the water separator regularly before you fire it up.

You find a better filter then Fleetgaurd for oil and Baldwin for fuel.  Dont waste your money on anything less for a cummins.  For oil i run Shell Rottella in the grey bottle. Change it at 7500 unless your towing a ton.  Ive done 2 engine oil anylsis now and both times they said whatever im doing keep it up
