Sight height measurement
« on: June 26, 2018, 04:54:21 PM »
I’m trying to figure out sight height for my Leupold CDS and I’m having some issues. I found a formula online: 1) Bolt diameter divided in half + scope tube diameter divided in half + the distance between the top of the bolt in the rifle to the bottom of the scope on the rifle. Add those three up and it’s supposed to be your sight height. So I’m getting 11/16 (.6875) for the bolt diameter divided by 2 is .34375, the diameter of a 30mm tube is 1.181 divided by 2 is .5905, and the top of the bolt inside the rifle to the bottom of the scope on the rifle is which is incredibly hard to measure  is 7/8 (.875).      So the sight height is supposedly . 34375+.5905+.875= 1.809.

When I open the bolt and measure as closely as I can from the center dot on the center of the bolt of the to the center of the scope it looks closer to 1.75 or a hair less. Is there any other way to measure this? And is that small of a difference in measurements going to make a difference shooting long range?

If anyone has a Tikka T3X Hunter with a Leupold VX 3i 4.5-14x40mm cds 30mm side focus using Leupold STD 30mm medium rings and STD Tikka T-3/whitetail Hunter 2 pc bases and has the correct sight height measurements, I could sure use them.

Sorry for the long winded post, I’m trying to pass along all the info. Thanks

The difference between 1.75 and 1.8 will be negligible. I’d just run with 1.8.
Any difference there will wash out with weather condition changes.  :twocents:

Eye ball a tape measure from centerline of scope to centerline of barrel will be close enough - you might be off by 1/2" at 1000 yards.....

Do exactly as Magnum_willys says and you'll be dialed in.

I used a set of micrometers and measured in increments and added them up.  Top of round half in battery to bottom of scope and then added half of the scope diameter and half the casing.
