Solid versus loose

Salt and supplements?  Anybody use loose or have any special blends?  Was wanting to try some di-calcium phosphate but haven't found a local source yet.  Interested in what others are using.

I use/have used both. Have not noticed much difference other than the blocks seem to last longer, VS the loose works into the ground and is still effective, unlike removing a block.

Loose salt does keep them pawing at the ground a bit longer.

Should not have a shortage of calcium or phos, maybe a slight issue in desert units with no irrigation around.  Loose is simpler for blends, salt, selenium and other micros.  Northwest beef from Wolfkill is great for a generic blend.  I have some loose of a custom blend with extra phos if you have a need.  If they are hitting alfalfa heavy the phos might be an issue.

I had good luck with loose keeping deer pawing the area for a much longer time. I have one area I spread a bag of loose 4 years ago that is still drawing deer. Blocks are more visible as well, though the holes dug are pretty noticeable...  I tried trace mineral salts but did not notice a difference over plain salt where I was using it.

I am on the coast now and have not run salt, have not taken the time over here and read that it is not near as useful here.

I've had better luck personally with blocks but I've also had blocks taken and moved by people and animals which gets annoying fast.

  I like to find rotting stumps or logs to pour some in along with kicking dirt or burying some. They will dig at it and it slows them down

Loose for me. Easier to haul in my backpack and easier to split up if I don’t want to drop a whole bag at each site. Dump it on the ground and once it rains it turns into a bloc anyhow.

I try to use loose if its available, had to haul in a block last time though. like somebody said it handy for splitting and putting in a couple different spots. Its darn near impossible to break the blocks when there fresh. And they can grow legs.

I will be trying a loose blend at an established lick on property we are purchasing.  2 parts stock salt, 1 part trace mineral, 1 part Dicalcium phosphate.   East side so rain is not an issue.

I put a bag of this out one year after the season closed under snow, came back the next spring after the roads cleared. You’ed have thought tweakers had found meth in the ground.👍

Rietdykes Milling Co. in Ridgefield.  Just put a blend out on an established salt spot on our new property.  Will be watching.
