Punched primer broken Jewel trigger.
« on: July 21, 2018, 07:13:10 PM »
I had new experience today.  Was down shooting at Eatonville and on my second to last shot for the day I realized the firing pin was not cocking on close. If I put the gun into safety, then to fire the pin drops.  Came home and removed the trigger and heard a rattler inside. Sure enough it broke.  There was a punched primer on the case.  The load has been the same for the last 100 rounds and I get about 6-7 reloads per brass.   Any idea why this happened? First three shot out of the rifle was 1.75@550.
338 edge
Defiance single shot
92.5 H10000
Cci 250
28” Broughton.
300 grain Berger
2850.

I just bought the “special” trigger.  I have one in my other rifle and like it a lot. For $290 the diamond is up there.

Looks Like H1000 is working great for you.  I was getting large es with it in my Lapua, and Retumbo was better but when I jumped over .030 es dropped to low single digits so maybe I'll try that with H1000.  Those edges are amazingly accurate with that universal 92-92.5 H1000 and CCI .

Are you loading very close to the lands?  If you are, it's possible one maybe slipped by you when you were seating the bullets and it was a tick longer OAL and since you are already on the high end of the load range with H1000, it doesn't take much to spike up the pressure.

Defensive Edge has done a lot of work with the 338 Edge and you are a full grain over his load with H1000 and a 300gr Berger.

Jewel makes the finest trigger available but that are not the most robust trigger, that is for sure, and they are prone to problems like you experienced with a hot load.

My COAL is 4.070 compared to defensive edges of 3.920.  I hit pressure around 94.  I am loaded .015 into the lands so i am not worried about that.  I might be returning the trigger for warranty, and then sell it and roll with the trigger tech.  I came with the rifle.  I shot nearly 100 rounds with the same load and have tight primer pockets and have been getting about 6-7 reloads.  Can't imagine its that hot where i am blowing primers.

Pretty sure I figured it out.  After taking all my measurements and checking my dies, somehow, someway, by shoulder on fired brass was .008 bumped back.  The chamber is already cut with no headspace.  Excessive head space can cause primer punching.

I believe edges are cut with zero or a hair less than zero headspace so the case fireforms out rather than stretching lengthwise during initial fireforming.   Good thing you caught it - wouldn't want to stretch all your brass right outa the gate.

It’s head stamped 338 Edge ADG brass.  Virgin brass is just right with the smallest amount of feeling the shoulder hit the chamber.
