dumb question regarding gmu's 340 & 342
« on: August 03, 2018, 07:37:43 AM »
Not at home so can't look at the game laws right now but......

got a quality elk archery tag for observatory unit which is gmu 340 & 342.  The tag is good for Sept. 8/20 in 340 and same time frame in 342 but I think 342 is not open for the general season for archery but open for the quality tag.

If I can fit it into my schedule will try to scout both gmu's this month but not familiar with either, my question is should I concentrate on the higher west part of each gmu or start scouting lower and in the east part of each unit?

About 4 or 5 years ago when I was thinking of hunting 336 and 340 several people told me 340 was a wintering range with only a few locals but not many. Have no information about 342, is it mainly a wintering area to or does it have a bigger concentration of elk in it?

If anyone can give me some information on where I should concentrate or at least start my scouting I would appreciated it.

theres elk in both your best bet is to scout before the season there is a lot of country and you wont see a whole lot from the roads.
Remember that buck is climbing that Mt. every day!

More hunting pressure in 340 since it's open for general season.

I would hunt 342, and hunt the deep dark canyons, you will find elk

I think the second week will be best for the rut, but the second week is open to cows in the general unit. In the general unit opening week might be slow with spike only hunters?

Elk are where you find them.  That being said if a big herd is around the Joe watt feeding area, it will bring in bulls during rut.  Big camp up the road to the north of feeding area might help if they don’t have permits themselves.  If you are a loner like me, the country along the border of 346 would be an area to check out.
