Pack-Out-Bags?
« on: August 25, 2018, 08:33:33 AM »
I’ve always been a pack frame guy come time to haul out my elk quarters but recently came across the Pack-out-Bags.  Anyone have experience using these?  The concept makes sense, especially for heavier big game animals.  Hopefully this stays in the Elk section as it’ll get lost within the gear threads.  Thanks!

Looks stupid to me.
When im packing elk quarters or anything else that has some weight, the last thing I want is the weight to be on my shoulders. Use your pack frame, get your waist belt set properly to hold the majority of the weight on your hips and start hiking out.

:yeah: I’ve had 139 lbs on my back one time, no way I could have done it without a frame.

I’ll admit, they look dumb.   If anything, I can see how the equal weight distribution would be an advantage.  Pack frame weight distribution on your hips works better milder incline/decline, not so much the lovely vertical stuff.

I’m a pack guy guy. For me I want the weight strapped on to me tightly, this system looks like all the weight is on your shoulders and would move around a ton.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Funny.  I’ve only read about them and not seen a picture until now.  Yikes.

Looks like the exact opposite of convenience.    :twocents:

I’m not sure where you’re located but if you’re near me in Enumclaw, buy an 80lb sand bag and come load it on my Exo.  Walk around the block and feel what a good frame does for you.  You’ll never go back to anything that puts weight on your shoulders for heavy hauls

Reminds me of the Butt Out tool.

Frame pack here.  And if the elk etc. has to be carried more than a few steps, it is total bone out.  Why carry heavy things that you cannot eat or display and that will have to be discarded anyway?

FWIW I simply cannot use hip belts on a pack for more than a few minutes or few steps.  My anatomy is weird or something.  I may snug it enough to keep the pack from moving on bad ground but have to carry the weight on my shoulders most of the time.  I worked on it for a bit with a major pack maker who finally said, "If I were you I would not use the hip belt either."

I’ve heard awesome things about the Exo’s.  Which one do you have?

Has anyone ever used it ? For 90% of hunters I bet this would work just fine..and I doubt it cost 700 bucks

I had the 2000 and upped to the 5500 this year.

Honestly if you’re hunting close to the truck anything will work.  If you are looking at some long hauls you’ll want something built for long hauls.  @fillthefreezer brought a bear home with his hunting partner last year that was 15+ miles in.  I would imagine you get pretty choosy about which pack you want at that kind of range.
