NRA launches I1639 website

Fairfax, Va. - On behalf of Washingtonians and the National Rifle Association for Freedom, the National Rifle Association launched an informational website. Initiative1639.org exposes how this extreme gun-control ballot initiative will add new restrictions on the exercise of Second Amendment rights, regulate ordinary, recreational guns in common use as “assault” weapons, drive up the costs of being a gun owner, and allow the government to authorize the surrender and confiscation of firearms as part of a verification process, all without doing anything to meaningfully address violent crime in Washington State.

"Law -abiding gun owners in Washington State need to understand the impact I-1639 will have on their Second Amendment right to self-defense," said Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action." The NRA’s new website, Initiative1639.org provides the facts on how this gun-control initiative will infringe on law-abiding citizens’ constitutional rights and make it more difficult to protect themselves and their families."

Highlights of the extreme gun-control provisions in I-1639 include:

Classifying ordinary, recreational rifles in common use as "assault" weapons; Imposing age-based gun purchase and possession bans on law-abiding adults, including a prohibition on adults aged 18-20 acquiring or purchasing semi-automatic rifles classified as "assault" weapons; Introducing new storage requirements that impede the use of guns for lawful self-defense and punish gun owners for the acts of criminals; Imposing a new $25 fee on sales and transfers of all guns that fall within the new definition of "assault" weapons; Allowing the government to establish a “verification” process to enforce compliance and authorize confiscation of firearms, based on the mandatory disclosure of information from gun retailers and gun owners.

Initiative1639.org makes it easy for voters to stay informed, register to vote, volunteer their time, and download material that highlights their opposition to this latest Seattle-inspired gun grab.

Glad to see them do something, but I don't know how many people on the fence will make their way to that website and learn anything.

Unfortunately, the only thing that works these days involves the court system.

Am I missing something in the text (https://sos.wa.gov/_assets/elections/initiatives/finaltext_1531.pdf), or do the purchase restrictions in this proposed law only apply to in-state purchases?  For example, there is nothing in this law preventing a person from purchasing their rifle at Cabela's in Post Falls....right?

Thurston and King will vote for whatever the NRA doesn't want them to. It doesn't matter what the bill even says.

The only upside to this bill is that it is so poorly written to where it will be easily challenged in court. But it still may go through if it goes to a judge that buys into anti-gun propaganda.

I wish I could move. There are so many screwed up things about this state that it's not funny. The sheep will all vote for this because big money people like Bloomberg and Hanauer and Allen and Gates are paying for all of the adds. The richest men in the world with guns all around them are deciding what my rights should be. Disgusting.

Even if you move the Californians will continue to follow just as they did here and in Colorado.

It was once unthinkable that anti-gun legislation could pass anywhere in Colorado.

This is the same type of brainless legislation we see here and in California. Even if you believed that AR15s are the problem how would a city ordinance change anything? There simply isn't a logical explanation if that is the goal. Or do they know it won't stop mass shootings and are just doing it to virtue signal and stick it to legal gun owners?

I don't have all the answers but I know the real problem is that the people are being fooled. They're being lied to which is really why there is so much support for gun control right now. Most people don't even know what semi-automatic means and many people believe you can buy a fully automatic AK-47 off the internet and have it shipped to your house. Put an end to that and watch these gun control movements fall apart.
