Hi there,

I'm new to the board, as I'm not so much a hunter myself.  I'm an avid trail runner and user of our public lands.  I was directed to this forum from a closed Facebook group.  We are putting on a permitted 100 mile race in the Teanaway on the weekend of September 15th and 16th.  In my discussions with the forest service, I was suggested to avoid October due to the modern firearm season.  However over the course of the past month or so, I became first aware of the high buck hunt and have since become aware of the archery seasons there as well.

There are trail racing events that coincide with hunting seasons and lands throughout the Western US.  Just last year, I was pacing a friend at an event this same weekend in McCall, ID.  Runners and hunters were sharing many of the same camps/aid stations.  I really believe that our race will have very little impact on hunting in the region.  We have about 90 runners registered.  The earliest finishers may be done in 24 hours and the last will be wrapping up in 40 hours.  That is to say that they will be very spread out.  You will not have a gaggle of runners blazing through your hunting zones.

That said, I wanted to make as many people aware of our event as possible.

Based on the reaction from the other group, I'm expecting some frustration over this.  I believe that moving the race up a weekend or two next year will alleviate any overlap of user groups.  I can assure you that our runners will have as little impact as possible out there.  We are certainly not trying to infringe on anyone else's recreational pursuits in this region.

Our runners are well aware of the hunting seasons occurring at the time of the run.  I'm just trying to make as many of you aware of our runners during your hunt too.

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,

I think that this is awesome of you to jump on here and give a heads up. I am an avid hunter who happens to run ultras in my spare time. Hunters that are giving you guff are too close to the trail anyway ;-)

100 miles is one hell of a race, enjoy!

Your fellow hunter/ultra runner,

Brock

I'd give a few of your stronger runners an empty pack to take with them. They could make up the race fees or any other expenses by throwing some meat in the empty pack and running it out.

Cool for you to post this heads up.

Please ask your runners to wear none animal colored clothing.
Also, please post up any negatives/positives you and your runners have with hunters in the process as well as any help you guys might have in the future with public land access.  Hunters and non hunters can work together and fight as a team if needed in the future.

Great post, XJ. Some good ideas here.

And thanks for the heads up on the race. Temporarily sticky'd for visibility.

Agree with everybody else, very cool of you to reach out and give people plenty of time to adjust plans as needed. But yes the weekend of the 15th will always be busy with hunters along the wilderness boundaries. BTW ya'll are nuts, that graph of verticle gain and loss on your page is enough to make me puke!

The issue is that the groups putting this on don't respect others.
I got caught in a road block during one of these events last year.
The people (city people) blocked the road that hunters and berry pickers were using. They were extremely rude too!!!!!
Numerous people stood in the road blocking it to through traffic (traffic wasn't much) and we were treated rude.
It would be nice if everyone was respected but it doesn't always happen.
Blocking roads is extremely rude. Even if it's only for a short period of time.

Thank you all for your responses!  I'm definitely learning as I go along, but I'm trying to do my due diligence.

Good of you to put a PSA our on here.

I would recommend posting flyers at trailheads, on road signs, and in other busy areas to let people know about it.

Good luck and be safe

I have no idea if it's the same 'group'.
And I never assumed or accused them as 'the same group'.
If you get caught up in one of their arrogant road blocks, you might think they are all the same people, but I don't know if they are.
They made us wait a long time before they moved out of the way when we needed to pass through.
It would be nice if they were required to hire a police officer to patrol the area.

How’d it go Brian (Teenawaycountry100)?  Thanks for the heads up and for your understanding of others.
