What do you think?
« on: September 03, 2018, 09:26:26 AM »
I've got a guess what caused the gash on this fawn's shoulder (living in rural Mason Co.).  What do you all think?

Follow my reasoning here.

First, the scar tissue is completely healed, which means the wound is at least a month or two old.  Second, that fawn is now just six months old.  Taken together, this would have occurred when the fawn was half her current size.  Had the would been caused by any type of predator, there is no way the fawn would have had the strength to fight or run.  Thus, the wound must have been caused by barbed wire or some other object.  I will guess the fawn tried to crawl under a fence, and her coat got caught on a sharp edge.

Now stop worrying about yearlings.  September 3rd already, go fill your tag!

I think Polar Bear and PD figured this out correctly.  I couldn't see a cat getting just a single claw in that hide, and if it had, it would have unzipped that fawn's shoulder so that it would never heal well or quickly.  Only a shallow wound would heal that well - something around a quarter of an inch or so.  Mom probably groomed the heck out of that wound as it healed.
Assuming it stays local once it is mature, it should be easy to follow that animal's growth etc. for the next several years.   Thanks for playing!

I've seen a ton of these scars on cattle as well as deer.  I have some pretty mean barbed wire.  :chuckle:

I’ve had goats with the same type wound from wire.👍

Just rub some triple antibiotic cream on it, just buffs right out.😉
