I would suggest buying a Weyerhaeuser access permit for the St. Helen's Tree Farm.

I would head East and keep heading that direction until you get out of Washington. In all seriousness there is some decent ground on the West side relatively close to your neck of the woods. Get some maps and so some research, talk to the game biologist for your area.

Go to the town of amboy find could bis tie rd drive up it on the left before campers hidaway there is some state land. Lots of small bucks n does in there. It's the Yale unit so it's a firearms ristriction. Or go east of hockinson find berry rd park at gate and walk in. Lots of deer on the Washougal game unit. Not much on the battleground 1. Good luck. I might be able to take you guys on a weekend if you pm me.

I like the idea of going East if you choose not to join up with experienced hunters on the Westside.  Blacktail are notoriously hard to see in the bush, and take a trained eye to find in clearcuts.  Klickitat units have a three point restriction, which limits success for a newcomer.  You should see some deer there though, which may not be the case on the westside.

The main point should be to enjoy your time together in the woods and hopefully get to experience the thrill of having a chance at a shot on a deer.  Next year, if your son's age allows, you may want to apply for a youth tag in Spring so that he can take a doe (if selected).
