Had a nice bear at 300 today, across too big of a draw and canyon to get across to him before he got behind the next ridge. Ugh.

Hunted the local area yesterday. morning and again in the evening. Let a small spike walk away with his 2 girl friends right after daylight. Saw about 8 or 9 other does and another spike.
We don't want to know your spot but, what kind of Deer?

Hunted my local spot and saw a buck (blacktail). This is a new spot for me and this was my 3rd time out hunting and the first live deer I’ve seen out there. I’ve seen some tracks and that was about it..
So I grab my bow ( I’ve got a multi season tag)and get my sneak on.. he’s about 100yrds out and not much cover (he’s on the edge of a clear cut). Wind is perfect. It’s about 7:00pm and starting to get dark.. I creep into 60 yards and he’s perfectly broadside just eating on a bush.. I’m torn, because I’ve practiced this shot a ton and feel good about it, but it’s now juuuuust dark enough that if I shoot, I won’t be able to see where I hit.. so I creep to within 40 yards and now it’s just too dark to shoot! Bummer.. deer never even knew I was there, I backed out and gonna try him again this week..
   Good luck to everyone..

Did some scouting for modern season yesterday. only saw one other vehicle the entire time?
Is Muzzle loader season like that? If modern season was a 10 out of 10 for amount of people out hunting what wound You say muzzy season is? 3 out of 10 or less in most places?
I know back when I bow hunted as a kid (in the 90's) I would be shocked if We ran into one other bow hunter. Is this what it's like to hunt with a muzzle loader? If so I'm sold.

I'd say 1 out of 10. Muzzle deer for at least the early season is a pretty terrible season. You can always get lucky but I'd say the modern season is FAR superior. I hiked 8 miles the other evening and didn't even see a deer in an area that holds lots of animals. They just aren't up and about during the day right now.

anyone else?  :hello:
I would love to hear how today is going for everyone.
Also maybe what kind of Your Deer Your hunting?
Good luck to all You Muzzy Deer hunters.  :hunter:

Not westside but I am out preparing for my draw tag that starts Monday morning. I helped a guy load a 4x4 muley into his truck this morning and saw another 4x4 in the back of another truck on the highway. Saw a great 3x3 in the area I can hunt as well. Definitely hoping to catch up to him.

Again, not westside but I missed a beautiful 4x4 double throat patch muley, wide as his ears and tall this afternoon on my archery draw tag. 700+ yd stalk to 44yds. Considerable crosswind and he bolted on my shot. He will haunt my dreams.  :ACRY:

I haven't saw any bucks since opening day. I've saw tons of does and accidently got into the elk twice. Can't wait for saturday when I can hunt both!
