The Nucleus action finally got here!
« on: September 26, 2018, 09:13:29 PM »
It took almost 9 months to get, but my new action finally showed up!

I threw my 6.5 Badger barrel on there and stole the trigger off a different rifle for now. I still need to figure out which stock I want too. I originally planned to use this action for my 270 Boondoggle project which is a hunting rifle build, so a relatively small #5 sporter contour barrel. I have a handful of other barrels that will fit this action (Savage barrel threads) though and most of those are varmint contour and larger. I might end up with two different stocks, one for hunting and another for everything else. If anybody has an old Rem 700 take off stock from an LSS model, let me know. That's the stock I'm really looking for at the moment.

The quick run down of the action:
- 3 locking lugs
- CRF
- Mechanical ejector
- Interchangeable bolt head/extractor
- Savage barrel threads
- Rem 700 stocks/ triggers
- Unique rotating bolt stop design

I love the action just from a design stand point since it has a bunch of very unique features. The bolt lift is lighter than a Rem 700 despite being a 3 lug, so that's a plus. And, because of the claw extractor I can use the smaller rimmed 8x68s brass for a couple of wildcats ideas without having to worry about extraction issues.

Cool I really look forward to your discussion. Is this the action that can switch back and forth between Right Hand and South Paw?

Have you checked redhawk rifles for the stock?

Awesome action!
Don't forget about the 72 degree bolt lift and toroidial lockup  :chuckle:
How does it compare to your mausingfield?

The 72 degree lift is cool, I still think from a functional stand point the toroidal lugs are an answer to the question nobody asked though.

I don’t have a Mausingfield any more, but only because somebody made me a good offer on it and it found a new home. I think the Mausingfield is a better action over all but the Nucleus is still a great option, especially in the $1000 price point. An integral recoil lug would be nice on the Nucleus since right now the scope base is used to properly align the recoil lug. I understand though that an integral recoil lug adds to the manufacturing costs of the action. The extractor on the Mausingfield is theoretically stronger but I doubt that it’s a meaningful difference. The 90 degree throw on a Mausingfield is a much more familiar move so the shorter throw of the Nucleus will take a little getting used to.

All I really want is a Ruger 77 Hawkeye action that will take a 3.800” OAL. The Mausingfield and Nucleus are both getting close, but not quite perfect. The Montana Rifle Company M1999 is very close but I’m not super happy with the quality of the ones I’ve seen.

It’s a shame so many cartridges get handicapped by the oal.  Why more companies have not properly addressed this issue beyond me. Would love a 3” SA and 4” LA, should be standard

Perhaps im mistaken, but i thought one of thier actions had a reversable bolt handle  that you could switch back and forth... or am i thinkng of a different company...

Cool action.

Believe it or not I was present when Ted fired of American Rifle Co.'s serial # 001.  Took a video on my phone.  If only I could find that phone and the video file!

Quite the actions. Has some cool features but I get hung up on the toroidal locking lugs. I can't figure it what the benefit of them is.

I don't have many wood stocked rifles but my 7mm Blaser Mag was built off of a Rem LSS donor and those LSS laminates make for a really nice looking stock.

I was a little surprised when I got my action and I have serial #00036. I had a chance to spend an afternoon with Ted about a year ago. I love his approach to firearms design, but his personality is a bit polarizing. My buddy who was with us couldn't stand Ted and said he'd never own any ARC products after that. :chuckle:

That's the one, thanks!

I understand the theoretical benefit but I doubt there's any practical benefit from it. A lot of the ARC designs are based on theoretically superior designs that probably won't offer much real world improvement. They make for great marketing points though!
