what to do with a RUM action
« on: October 27, 2018, 09:35:15 PM »
I found a stainless Rem 700 in 300 RUM with a Timney CE trigger and Talley light weight rings in a B&C Alaskan stock for a good price, so I grabbed it. I plan on taking the stock and trigger for another project, which leaves me with a SS barreled action in 300 RUM that I figure I'm into about $200 after deducting the value of the stock and trigger. You know what that means? It's new project time!

So the big question now is what can I do with a SS Rem 700 magnum action? I've got a couple of barrels sitting here that I could use including an X-Caliber varmint contour 1-7" twist .257 that would finish at 27", a K&P #5 heavy sporter 1-7" twist .277 that will finish at 25", a varmint contour Broughton 1-8" twist .277 that will finish at 28", and a Brux MTU contour 1-7" 6mm that would finish at 22". I'm not limiting my self to these barrels, that's just what I have on hand.

This would be the perfect action to build another 270 RUM and use one of the .277 barrels and the 270 RUM reamer I have on hand, but I'm just finishing up the 270 Boondoggle project so I'm not sure I need another magnum 270 at the moment. The 6.5 Badger covers the fast 6.5mm category and I've got the 375 BME and 375 Ruger to cover the 375s. I've already had 7mm, 300, 338 and 375 RUMs, as well as a 338 Edge, so I don't need those. The 458 Arnold covers the big bore chamberings, although something in a .416 or .423 might be fun since I don't have either of those at the moment. This might be a good action to build a fast 257 to shoot the 128gr Hammer Hunter and the 131 Blackjack bullets out of, but I had planned on using a magnum short action I have sitting around for that project.

I'm almost to the point of designing a completely unique case and just having RCC make me some custom brass for it. Something along the lines of a scaled up 284 Win case maybe........

Blackjack is going to release a heavier .257 bullet. When I spoke with them they did mention that .165 free bore would be just right for both bullets. If I recall correctly we were discussing the 25-.300 Ultra Magnum. CH4D has the dies in stock. 😬

sounds like you have all the bases covered. You probably should sell the action to me for a modest price :chuckle:

sounds like a 25 rum. Be a fun yote round.

505 Gibbs! But throat it for the big heavies, it will look like a huge 300 blackout  :chuckle:

I was thinking of doing a 6-284 pistol with the 6mm barrel.

I can call it the 500 Knockout!

My concern with going to something like a 25 RUM is powder availability. The 270 RUM and 6.5 Badger are both at the point where there’s dead space in the case with max loads. Some of that can be fixed by using some of the extruded powders instead of US869, but then you start having powder bridging issues even with a relatively shallow shoulder angle. I hate to say it, but the 25 Nosler might be the best option for a big 257.

I think that you should build a very generic, but superbly accurate 7MM RUM.
Build it such that it shoots factory ammo the best.
Put an old Night Force on it (one that you've grown bored wit but is nearly current and basically new).
Shoot it for an afternoon.
Get bored with it.
PM me with an offer to sell it to me basically for free.

I can't think of a better use for that action.

Build something boring to sell it to dano and then buy somthing really exciting !

A light 270 ultra mag would be cool...then I'd buy it ! After using those hammers I wana try a fast 270 wsm with a lighter bullet...but still hoping to get a kill with the 285s this year...the hammer bullets have became more interesting then the cases that push them in my opinion

You could do a
6-300 win mag
6-PRC
 .257/26 Nosler.
Or make those .257.

I know you like overbore

The funny thing is that I have a NF NXS sitting around that I'm bored with. I added a poll with the option for me to build a 7 RUM for you, so lets see what the rest of HuntWa thinks of your idea. :chuckle:

I've thought about both the 6/6.5 PRC and a 6/300 PRC as well as 25 caliber versions of either of those. I'm trying not to get stuck in a rut and keep using the same parent case (375 Ruger) for too many projects but it really is a great case to work with. In fact I have 50 pieces of 375 Ruger basic brass that I've considered using for a 50/375 Ruger straight.

Maybe a 270 with enough twist to shoot something like the 170 Bergers.  Probably the easiest and cheapest would be a straight 270-300RUM.  You could use ADG 300RUM brass, which is Lapua quality, and 300 RUM bushing dies.  I'd imagine you could get those 170's to leave the barrel round 3500-ish FPS, depending on barrel length.

But, considering you already have a 270 in the works, that may not interest you.

You could always have the bolt face opened up, install a M16 type extractor, and use the 300 Norma case for a variety of different wildcats.  With Lapua now making 300 Norma brass there seems to be a lot of new interest in wildcats based off of the 300 Norma Improved.  It works better as a repeater also.

If it were me. I would go with the .416 RUM. Lesson learned from having my .458 Ultra Magnum built. The .416  diameter bullet is a great big bore choice. There is a larger selection of .416 bullets now. I really enjoy shooting the .416 Ruger. With a RUM case behind a .416 diameter bullet, it’s just more of a good thing.

I’m not a 7mm fan. But, I voted for Dan-O because I like his pink car.  :chuckle:

Personally, I would build something to load the big 7mm's or 338's but you've been there done that. The overly overbored stuff is just stupid to me.
I have to go with BH on this one. A big bore like the 416 or maybe even a 408 would be fun! Heck, save yourself the trouble and just sell me the action....
