Thrill kill ?

Had an odd series of events yesterday.
We had been out most of the day watching deer and taking pics. We were on a nice buck, and about 1/2 mile down in the canyon bottom/main road we heard 6-10 shots go off in a minutes time(sounded like pistol fire) didn't think much of it at the time.
About an hour later, at the truck, a guy pulls up and asks if we had shot a deer and lost it. He spotted a small spike that had been shot laying dead maybe 40 yards above the main road. This was in a quality permit area, and he thought someone had shot and lost it. I told him highly unlikely, silly to shoot a spike with that permit.
He was a retired county deputy, had already reported the find, and was told by WDFW that he could gut it and take it to a nearby meeting place where a officer would meet him. (Don't get why the officer would not come to the scene) He was hoping they would let him keep it.
We decided to head up to where the deer was to check out the scene, and help him load it in his truck.
Deer was still very warm, entrance an exit holes both pencil sized, lung shot, deer basically dropped and rolled 20 yards till stopped, no footprints to the scene except original guys up and back when he saw it dead. I looked around for spent casings and did not find any, but there was some fresh vehicle tracks that looked like someone peeled out leaving in a hurry.
We helped him gut and load it,(I took the heart) exchanged names, and off we all went. Driving home the guy was stopped and waiting at their pre-determined meeting place, then about 30 minutes later we saw the WDFW truck heading up the highway. So I guess it was all legit
Was a weird situation to me and then regretted why we took part in touching/helping out with a deer that was poached? The wife called WDFW and gave them our story of the happenings.
Didn't think they would let the guy keep it, but maybe cause he was an ex deputy they would.

Or just wigged our after killing it, or could have been coming back after dark.

Why are you regretting it? Seems like yours and the other guys side was all legit. I don't see any reason to let the poached animal go to waste.

It more then likely would have just gone to waste and if it seems legit as it does no reason to feel that way.

Just seemed weird to be handling a buck/bloody hands/having heart only in my vehicle.....only going on the word of a person you just met. No tag on buck, bullet wound, …..honest officer, this is what happened. who knows, weirder things have happened, hence why we reported also.
Regret prolly not the right word, I like to always be on the safe side of things, so this felt weird.

Got a callback from the officer that went to the scene, nice guy, asked a lot of questions and said he would call me back in a few days after finishing investigation.
