Fortunate it was alone, likely different outcome with friends about.  Gee warden, they took my tagged buck, may I have another tag please?

i have to say that whatever it was, if it were me in that situation, the wolf/dog would have been confirmed by autopsy after it was shot. One lunge towards me is all it would take, without hesitation

And I say that with as little "internet tough guy" as possible. If it was obviously a domesticated dog I would hold off on the trigger unless it straight up attacked but that close to looking like a wolf... bang. Dead critter

hrm

can't imagine a wolf not keeping a constant eye on a person until they were well and gone,  tucked tail shows some fear and uncertainty, I think a wolf stealing a kill woulda had the tail high and proud or flat out straight, not tucked.

I wasn't there, maybe if the person who had his buck stolen had recognized it as a domestic dog he would have acted far differently, maybe patted his knee and called it to him.  Tucked tail, licking its lips, it might have come greeted him and been his friend for a little bit.
