Idaho elk help
« on: November 24, 2018, 05:40:34 PM »
Looking for some help finding some elk areas in idaho. My group is planning on hunting unit 1 and yes I know theres wolves and I know this topics been covered before. Just looking for some conversation or a PM to help a group of firefighters out. A few in the group have never hunted before, but they're willing and able to put in the time to find an elk. I really just want the new hunters to have an opportunity and learn something about harvesting an animal, that may be learning about tag soup. Thanks in advance.

J

Unit 1 is tough compared to nearby units. Any particular reason you are looking at it

One tip from me, one only. Go south until you get away from wolves and start there.

We chose unit 1 due to the large group we have, the proximity to one of the guys home, and theres no special draw or permit to access. I've hunted northeast Washington and I've dealt with the wolves but I've been on elk every year. I know northern Idaho is rugged, northeast washington can be too. I will be headed over scouting next July. If someone is willing to persuade me to another area I'm open to suggestions. Just looking for some help for a great group of guys

Well, it’s not like I want to persuade a big group of guys to come hunt where I go.  It’s just unit one is tougher for elk than much of Idaho.    That being said, the largest bull I’ve ever seen was there so I get it.   Unit one has had wolves and grizz for a long long time.   I wouldn’t say it’s changed the elk hunting there.

:yeah:there is less elk in unit 1 than other nearby units but there is also a lot less elk hunters. Could be a decent trade in my opinion.
