Opinions on Maverick 88 Shotgun

I have been looking around for a basic pump shotgun and love Mossbergs. Whenever I handle a pump that has a non tang safety or a slide release in a different spot I fumble. I would really like to just pick up another 500 but I keep seeing the Maverick's for such a low cost. But I wonder about quality. The new shotgun would be either meant for waterfowl and then I would convert my old beat up (only like 30% blueing left etc) 500 into something else or I would like to get a security style and then keep the old one for waterfowl. The non waterfowl shotgun would be shorter barreled and used for home defense, coyote hunting, and it would be my go to gun if I have shot a bear and have to track it through thick stuff.
What do you think of the Mavericks? Cheap crap? Good for the price?....

Just as good as the 500 in 12 gauge. The smaller gauge mavericks have real bad forearm flex. My maverick has been through the ringer for sure, and it's never let me down. The only difference is the safety.

Yes imo the feel very similar to ta Remington 870 pump.  Main difference is how the barrel attaches to the magazine tube.

What I like about the tang is that you can easily see if it is hot. Very useful when with an inexperienced shooter, especially for something like waterfowl where there is a lot of shooting. Maverick is fine though if you are just using it for home defense.

My advice would be to put a pistol grip on your 500 and then look at a 535 or 835. That way you have the option of 3.5 shells.

Yes. If the OP wants a tang safety, he'll need to stick with the Mossberg.

Thanks everyone. Yea, I think I will end up sticking with the Mossberg. Probably getting a new one for waterfowl and making some changes to the old beater I already have.
I have a nice Mossberg 535 as well, but its the slugster model. And I have a scope mounted on it (not a cantilever barrel). It is dialed in and has killed a lot of deer and is my main weapon for deer and bear as I hunt mostly in firearm restricted areas.
I had thought about just getting a field barrel for it for waterfowl, but then I am stuck with having to remount and zero my scope after duck season every year. Not sure if its worth it. $250 for just getting that barrel. And for $350-$450 I can get a whole new gun and possibly a 835 or maybe make the jump to a semiauto.

Once I mount a scope on a gun it stays on that gun unless I dont want it on there any longer or I buy a better scope to put on it.

If I want that style of gun with out a scope for another purpose I go out and buy another gun instead of peeling the scope off.

I have an old Ithaca 16 gauge model 37 pump that I mounted a scope for deer hunting. That scope has been on that gun for over thirty-five years, maybe close to forty years and still gets them slugs right in there.

Lot of good deals on the 835 can be found. Downside is that you can't shoot slugs without changing the barrel. Beast of a gun though.
