Merwin and kokes
« on: March 25, 2019, 04:17:50 PM »
A buddy and I shot up to merwin Sunday. Morning was looking great. Calm partly sunny/ cloudy. Lots of other boats there.  We long lined 125’ with dodgers & hoochies tipped with tuna and corn. All colors green, pink, and purple. No action not even a bump. Broke out the downriggers for various depths 5’ intervals to 60’. Still no action tuff day for sure. Went to wedding rings, rooster tails and panther martins. Still no action. Couldn’t figure it out deffinatly a head scratcher. Maybe next week I’ll get blood in the boat.

Make sure you go slow. Then go slower. Also, zig zag.

Trolling for Kokes, I am usually at 0.5 mph to 1 mph and troll in an “S” pattern so your lure/bait starts and stops (falls) on the inside turns and  then speeds back up on the outside of the turns.
This can make the difference and trigger a strike when they are not biting well.

👍 Alchase. I don’t think I’ve ever trolled less than 1mph. Great reminder on S turns I rarely do them.

Yeah, what he said.  When you think you're trolling too slow, troll slower.  Maybe even go further back with your presentations.  Were you marking any fish?

I was there sunday as well. The fish are really shallow right now. You won't see them on the fish finder. We were running 200+ft behind the boat from 10-25ft down. Pink flasher and pink hoochie has been the most effective, caught a few on orange doger with sunrise hoochie. Trolling at 1.1-1.3mph. The crowd right outside the bay is catching fish, no need to go very far. We went 14 of 15 hooked for 2 people running 3 rods.

I also found having your pole go out the side not out the back, made a big difference in presentation as you do “s” turns.
Your bait/lure will slow down raise and fall more pronounced then straight out the back.
Another rig to try is a Double Wammy (change the hooks out to Gamakatsus I do this with all my lures) with a couple white shoepeg corn kernels on the top hook and pink (only pink seem to work) Power Bait Maggots on the trailing hook. You can spice it up with aWillow leaf flasher string (use a snubber) in front of the Double Wammy when it is slow.
