Garmin 60CSX

Alright guys,
I just got home and I've been eager to play with my new toy. This thing is great. It's my first GPS and I am already seeing the benefits to having one of these (besides emergencies).
My first question with this thing is.... What software are you guys using with your GPS, and why? Also, where have you found the best maps for our state?
Thanks!

Well... it is really not that complicated, but it can be confusing.
As far as software to use in your GPS you are typically limited to proprietary software. There are some hacks to use other brands, but I wouldn't reccomend it.
So for hunting you will want Garmin TOPO to put on or in your Garmin GPS.
As far as software to use on your PC... there are a bunch. But the Garmin TOPO works just fine for most people. Makes it simple to buy one package and use for both purposes.
Later, if you want, you can pick up NG Topo or any other compatible brand for use on your PC.
Your GPS will only take Garmin software, but your GPS will communicate with other brands on your PC and you will be able to transfer waypoints between the two.

billythekidrock is right, you can only use garmin software with the gps.
Purchaes the Garmin TOPO and City Navigator, you will not be disappointed, they work excellent. Get a bigger memory card for it, if you have not done so (you can download the city nav and topo for the whole state if you have a bigenough memory card).
And you can send waypoits to the gps with other software but not maping software. I have pluged in my gps to my Lap top com. and tracked my movement on it in the woods (just for fun).
If you wnt the marien maps it will cost a bit more, but it show topo for the lakes and salt water. The regular topo has the topo for the Puget Sound and the Wa coast, you can see the depth of the water and other info also.
You have made a wise choice in GPS.

I got the 60csx last hunting season and I'll tell you that you won't regret it. The thing is easy to use and has been an awesome tool for me.

I appreciate the tips guys. I just pulled the trigger on the TOPO software. We'll see about possibly getting the marine/city software later. I definitely want that TOPO though for hunting this year..
Thanks again guys,
Curtis

the topo can be burned from anothers discs. Dont have to buy new. Marine cannot.
If you need a copy let me know. I have all three.

Hey guys,
Both my brother and i own 60SCX's, and my old man has the Vista, so we bought the TOPO program and find it useful.
However, recently I bought garmins micro SD chip with almost all of the western states on it and its definitely the way to go. before I had to load the particular area I was going be in on the small 16K chip that came with the gps. Now that they are much larger it it beats fiddling with the TOPO program until I have a bunch of saved tracks, destinations, waypoints etc. to get on the home comp.

I'll check that out, I appreciate the tip! I went ahead and bought TOPO, and it totally made the GPS for me. I am sold now, and that thing stays with me anytime I'm out.
