I'd check the weight of the synthetic against the weight of the wood before I did anything. I have seen some synthetic stocks that were heavier then wood.
yes, the cheaper ones are mostly cosmetic and sound like an amplified children's plastic hammer when you bounce them off a try branch going through the timber. I would suggest that you look at the higher quality ones - or possibly even try to find a new Remington XCR stock would fit your rifle. I seem to remember someone trying to sell one recently on here - but not sure if it would fit your action.
Look at the Hogue rubber coated ones. As far as a B&C, McMillan, or HS Precision... fairly certain he wanted it lighter guys
