Wolf in camp
« on: June 09, 2019, 08:11:40 AM »
My first close up encounter with a wolf was not how i expected it. We were bear hunting in the Wenaha and had a wolf walk into our camp. We had a brutal hike the day before and i was dead asleep at first light when my buddy punches me in the shoulder. Something had woke him up, he said get your rifle. (Thinking bear) We scrambled out from under the tarp to the sound of loud barking.

She kept barking and howling and then walked into view at about 50 yards. Then she would circle back out of sight. After doing this a third time i dug out my cell phone but she never came back. I got a short audio of her barking as she left.

Grey in color. I’d estimate 120-140 lbs. by the way she was acting i wondered if we were the first humans she had encountered

Good thing your buddy is a light sleeper. Had the same thing happen in the Alpine wilderness 5 years ago while bear hunting, but it was a big male coyote. I don’t think it had ever seen a person either. It kept circling me making smaller circles each time yipping and growling.  I didn’t want to scare everything in the country off so I started off by waving my hands and throwing rocks at it which then turned into yelling. And I ended up shooting him at about 10 feet in the chest with my 30-06. He definitely had made his mind up that I was fair game for breakfast.

Circling and howling in camp and at 50 yards? Sounds like self-defense time.

Yeah i wonder how they would rule on that. I didn’t feel threatened but that would have probably changed if there were multiple wolves.

That would be a massive female.    140 is a beeg male in Idaho.  If I’m mistaking please correct me.  Shoulda been throwing lead.

Oh i have no idea male or female. Just called it a she... I’m judging weight off an excited eyeball experience...comparing it to the big dogs I’ve owned and what they weighed. Odds are good i over estimated.
