I was about 12 and we were fishing on the Snake River, don't remember where. We caught some great Rainbows from the boat and we came back to the camp ground for lunch. While lunch was being made I went down to dock and threw my line out. Leaned it up against the ladder, took 3 steps back and turned around to watch a fish yank it over, I dove in after it but didnt get it. Grabbed my dad and uncle, my dad tied on a big treble hook to his pole to snag it. This is a no B.S story, he snagged it first cast  :kneel: No Trout on the other end though, it was a 2# Squawfish
The mountains are calling and I must go

Shad fishing on the Columbia years ago. Snagged up several times in a row and lost a few jigs to my fishing partner’s amusement. Next cast I’m snagged but slowly getting some line back. The ‘stick fish’ jokes begin, until a nice baitcasting rig breaks the surface on the end of my line. Complete rig right down to a couple of Dick Nites in good shad colors. I cleaned the reel and got a few years out of it, but it never was very smooth after having a full load of sand in the gears. The rod continues in service- my son caught a mess of lake Washington perch on it last Friday.
There is not enough wilderness left in the world, or in the hearts of men.

Lost a fly rod in a Canadian lake but went back and found it.  I had stopped fly casting and decided to troll the fly as I rowed a half mile to the other end of the lake.  Never saw when the rod went over, clear tea water mostly about 15 feet deep.  I went back the next day with free diving gear planning to search the length of the lake on the path I rowed and found it on my first breath of air.

Pulled up a custom rod and reel from the Kenai years ago, pristine condition obviously only in the water a few hours.  Caught a ton or two of fish on that sweet rod before it eventually broke trying to horse a big river salmon from shore, and I still use the Daiwa SeaLine reel.
