Stuck Evinrude outboard

I picked up a 14’ lake boat from a guy and he gave me a 2.5hp Evinrude with it and told me it was seized.  I gave the pull cord a tug and sure enough it’s stuck.  Is it worth trying to fix it, or should I just toss it?  I’m pretty handy with tools, but will be the first to admit I know nothing about outboards.

Id only do it if its your thing to get old stuff running again... which i totally get by the way.

2.5hp for a 14 foot boat sounds kind of underpowered.

Circa late 80s 2 stroke?

I’d toss it in the metal recycle bin.  If you do restore it you will have an engine worth $200-$300.  Though solid performer in its day, these are dirty, stinky polluters by today’s standards.  Not worth the effort.

higher thrust electric will do wonders, on a windy day troll upwind of the boat launch     (trust me on this)

If you're going to can it, I would be interested in taking a crack at it, and I may be in your area this week.  I've been looking at getting a small engine project to teach my oldest about engines.  Let me know.

I have a 9.9 2 stroke I’m looking to trade for a long shaft

I pulled the spark plugs to add some transmission fluid to help break it free and the top plug had white oily fluid.  I assume that is water mixed with oil and not a good sign.  Going to dump it.

Look up a couple of forums for vintage outboards.   I gave a couple away a few years ago that had a cylinder open to rainwater since 1972.   Vintage aficionados may want it, and it is better than dumping it immediately.

Flounder wants it too, for the very same reason.

Someone may have a salvageable powerhead that can be grafted on to your lower, or your powerhead may be salvageable.  People love working on those old things. 

The window for me has passed, but you should consider listing it free on craigslist.
