How many have seen........
« on: March 30, 2009, 06:25:33 PM »
Any of you that hunt the NE corner of the state for turkey run into any grizz's over the years ?

My buddy and I spotted a huge sow with 2 cubs a few years back...... earlier that morning we came across a huge pile of poo.... It could have been left by Yelp, now that I know a little more about his poo tactics.....
But this pile had no shirts sleeves or socks around it....LOL

Anyways, she was across a large ravine and feeding with her cubs so we didnt feel much threat.
We are now very careful in that area because we know that there are at least 4 of the big bears in da woodz

Yelp takes his used socks, half shirts, sleeves etc, out with him.....could have definetly been him. :chuckle:

To answer your question....no....only Black Bears.

Me neither, just blacks.  I have a buddy that swears he did last summer up near Salmo.  I have heard a few other second hand stories.  I think one was shot last year by a hunter that misidentified it.

My mom wons some property up there.  One of the neighbors down the road swears she saw one while cruising timber a couple of years back.  Nothing confirmed though...

There's been grizzlies in that area ever since I cam remember. They come and go from Danville to Newport. I saw a sow and 2 cubs on my place up there 9 yrs ago, I told the GW and he asked me how I knew it was a Grizzly, I told him I've seen enough of them in Alaska that I can pretty much tell the 2 apart. I believe that they finally got some pictures of grizzlies on trail cams in the wedge area and were verified. The Selkirks have a fairly constant population of them.

I tried to run one down East of Oroville a few years ago.  I bet you he was 500 lbs., big for an interior griz.  I talked  to a couple of USFS workers and they had seen the bear as well.  We have also seen tracks in the NE where we WT hunt.  Where we hunt in MT is full of them and it is kind of funny following their tracks in the snow and going in the same direction as they.  Two buddies that live in MT had to kill one while bow hunting 3 years ago.

Up Silver Creek over by Deep Lake.  It is mountain land.  Not populated.

Not sure where Silver creek is but I do know where Deep lk is.  Have some friends out past Deep lk and they havent seen any around thier place.

The same thing happened when we saw ours.. we took pics and sent them to WDFW...... they said no that is a color phase blackie....... Oh ya right !!   I guess they couldnt see a HUGE hump across her back !!!
Later they did confirm that indeed we were correct.
