Calling in mountain lion
« on: July 25, 2019, 09:48:35 AM »
anyone with succes calling In cats with a electronic caller? I live in unit 578 which is a very cat rich environment. Going to give it some Sits this fall. Not sure what would be the best all to use fawn in distress, rabbit, house cat or exactly how to go about it. Thanks

Check out Rainshadow

^^ Ditto ^^  And good luck!

I am one of those callers who thinks that set up is many times more important than exact prey sound, but adding Rainshadow lion vocals ups the odds of a kill a lot.

I have called lions with hand calls and electronics using jackrabbit distress of several brands and tones, fawn bleats, cottontail and one time some bird/woodpecker distress. I am convinced from experience that adding Rainshadow lion vocals to alternate with prey sounds, or even going with Rainshadow sounds alone, greatly increases the odds of seeing a lion.

FWIW, besides prey sounds I had one cougar come in to rattling antlers when I was hunting whitetail deer.  A friend of mine had a pair come in to mule deer doe in heat sounds when he was calling for a buck.

Again, best of luck... and post pics with your success story!

Agree!

I've called in a handful of lions and haven't connected because my setup wasn't the best.  My first calling session led to a huge lion coming in that just "appeared" at the base of a large jackpine.

I seen the 'lump' there at the base of the tree and because I was trying to be so still and not move a muscle; I didn't want to move and glass it because I didn't think it was anything.
So I sat there for 30-40 minutes in the failing light scanning the areas with my peripheral vision while being perfectly still..... but I kept pausing that that 'lump' and 2nd guessing myself.

The lump never moved in all that time, and that helped me talk myself out of moving enough to see it through a scope.  When I finally called it quits that lump was still there, still hadn't moved, but when I stood up and started stretching my back out that lump also stood up, it was a huge lion and it just slunked off.  I missed my opportunity  :(

So like a military sniper, learn and memorize every lump, every shadow, every dark spot..... and if anything changes...put glass on it!
