Heard of the blacktail coach?

Just wonder if anyone has heard of these guys or has personal experience with them? Sounds like they have been at a few of the shows this past year, I tried searching on here and didn’t see any other post discussing them.

 Heard there podcast today and was intrigued as it is so hard to find anything on Blacktail hunting outside of the classics that are now out of print.

He’s been at Puyallup and Portland sport shows last few years sat through seminar he’s got a good pitch and info but it’s not cheap

He’s a nice guy, I’ve talked to him at several shows. I haven’t attended his seminar/class, but I’ve heard good things about it. I know that there is an emphasis on using bait for cataloging deer and conditioning does, I’ll be curious how they adapt the material with the new bait/scent bans. If you’re struggling with success for blacktail it wouldn’t be a bad course to consider.

Alex Chaney turned me on to the blacktail coach. I haven't attended any courses but I've listened to all the podcasts and there is lots of information in them. Alex is on 3 episodes about turkey hunting and one about the buck he killed last season. Alex is a friend of mine and a very good hunter and says the blacktail coach is pretty legit so I take his word for it.

I took his class a few years ago and he was really knowledgeable. His experience in hunting the big bucks shows. To be fair he put on a seminar free for military veterans so I didn’t pay for it. If I was hunting west side more I would of paid for it for sure. If you just want to put meat on the table his approach may not be the best way to do that. However, if your after big bucks it’s the best approach. You’ll still have to put in time of course. They don’t get big by being stupid and from what I remember the real big boys may only come out during shooting hours 5 days a year during the peak rut.

This sort of thing bums me out. The hunting industry needs less people trying to profit off of our public natural resources, not more. Making hunting a success based game with $$ signs associated with the haves and have nots is a sure way to ruin what we have.

Wish he would have found a different way to get the information out if that’s his goal. Otherwise his goal is $$$.

Yes, I attended one of his seminars this spring and I have listened to all of the podcasts.  He has a system that works for him and is happy to share that system with others, of course there is a money factor there.  You can get the gist of the system if you listen to the podcast but it is based on using scents and they used to use bait before it was banned.  I haven't tried to use his system at all but I thought it was interesting information.  Full transparency, the seminar I attended was free to me as a veteran, so I didn't pay for the seminar.

Thanks for the info, they seem like good guys. Do they send you home with materials from the class, or do you have to write everything down so you don’t forget something? My memory and attention span are not what they used to be .

I am definitely willing to pay if it helps me become a better hunter faster, had to figure out this hunting thing on my own. I have finally started to find the BT in my spot, but only locating does and 1.5 YO bucks. Until the rut is in action, then the bigger boys show up for week and are gone again. These guys are making it sound like they have a specific habitat they target and most people over look. I don’t know, I think it is nice to hear people passionate about BT and trying to build up a community within their course alumni.

Big bucks stay hidden until the rut. So if your seeing them in daylight for only a week that is how they survived to be big. They like the big thick areas (forget about clearcuts dont waste your time) it makes them feel safe because no predators can really sneak up on them without alerting them. Look for edges on a sat image where deciduous and conifers meet. Usually some trails right there.

I havent been in a few years but i got a handout but you have to fill it out as your taking the class. In the military i learned that the more ways your brain processes the information the easier it is to retain. Listening is level 4 retention, Listening while reading the words is level 3 retention, Listening while writing (and you reading the words as you write them) the words is level 2 retention, and the best way to retain information is to teach it with reading, speaking, and engaging the audience with questions.

I took notes the entire time with my head down more than up watching the powerpoint slides even if i didn't get the whole slide and i still remember a good chunk of the class. I also have my notes that i took that i can look back on.

Blacktails aren’t that hard to get all it takes is boots on the ground and some time . Some figure things out quickly some don’t its chess

I took the class. I started hunting about 7 years ago and struggled to get a buck even a spike. Learning these deer during prime hunting time is a very limited window. Dave and his group are good people. And he talks about how it’s not for everyone. I did the hike and hope method for years with very little opportunity. Last year I got my first buck a solid 3x3. They do give you documents and you can reach out to Dave and the crew even after your classes are done. You’re welcome to take notes which I did as well. Your classes start roughly in may and go through the entire year. I learned a lot about deer and their paths, how to identify trails better. I am but one person, but for me it was worth it.
