Shed hunting dogs?

does anyone know any breaders that train dogs to find antlers?

Don't know any but I bet it would be easy to train a lab or golden retriever.  Just make it a game with the pup to first retrieve, lots of treats and big time praise, then begin hiding them, same rewards and praise and then take them on walks.  But be careful now, if the WDFW get wind of this they will deem it socially unacceptable and it will be outlawed!  The sheds have no way to run off and hide and they can no longer defend themselves.

No, it's because the Fish and Game Department has decided, for no other reason then, THEY have deemed coyote hunting with dogs is socially unacceptable.  What freaks me out even more is most sportsmen in this state didn't even bat an eyelash.  Think about that for a second.  The Fish and Game Department, on their own, decided a type of hunting was socially unacceptable.  That should scare the heck out of everyone of us.  But it didn't.  That is sad.

How do you hunt coyotes with dogs?

Well you can do it a couple of different ways,

First, decoying--Sneak into an area and have a dog, usually a cur or something along those lines run out and basically troll for a yote, once a yote is spotted or detected the dog heads back to the waiting hunter with coyote in tow where he is whacked.

Second way is a hound is roaded or released on fresh tracks and they chase the yote either into gun range or close enough to release a catch dog, like a greyhound, where the yote is run down and caught.

The new law is so vague if you have a ranch dog, your bird dog, or your waterfowl dog with you and you shoot a coyote you can be hooked up at the discretion of the WDFW officer.

When my Mom and step dad lived in Cody they got a lab pup. Stepdad always  played fetch with a deer shed and told the dog to find the bone when he threw it. That dog has found him more sheds than he ever did on his own. He would take it out and tell it to find the bone. Dog would basicly work like it was pheasant hunting and bring him back a shed when he found it. The dog is now 8 years old and he lives back here and mom is still in wyoming. He origionally got the dog to keep him alerted in the griz country while shed hunting. He figured why not try and see if he could train in to find sheds. It can be done. Just don't leave any of the antlers you want to keep lying around, might turn into a chew toy for the dog.
